The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with young children in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn from birth to five, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, and how to keep children safe and well while their families are at work or study. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it is practical, hands-on and focused on what happens in a real service rather than theory for its own sake.
Australian diplomas are usually made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. At this level the units are competency-based: you have to show you can actually do the task, not just write about it. Expect units covering child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, nutrition, working with families and cultural diversity, and legal and ethical requirements. A large part of the course is work-integrated learning. You go into a registered early childhood service and work alongside educators, building up the hours needed to be counted as a qualified educator. Assessment happens on placement as well as in class, and a supervisor signs off that you can do the job unsupervised.
Early childhood is one of the fields in Australia where the regulator sets the bar for who can be counted in the staff-to-child ratio. The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is the qualification that lets you work as a room leader or lead educator in a long day care centre, preschool or family day care service. Because the job involves children, you also need a Working with Children Check in the state or territory where you work, and a first aid certificate that covers asthma and anaphylaxis. The course will tell you what you need to arrange before placement starts.
This diploma suits people who like being around young children and want a qualification they can use quickly. It is also a pathway: many students use it to move into a bachelor degree in early childhood education, sometimes with credit for the units they have already completed. International students should check the official CRICOS listing for this course (code 118897G) for the exact campus locations, English requirements and tuition. The Student visa lets you work up to 48 hours a fortnight while you study, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish. Confirm all of that on the official page before you apply.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
