About this program

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, and how to keep children safe and well. The course mixes classroom learning with time in a real service, so you practise what you learn with children, families and qualified educators around you.

As a diploma, this sits at the middle of the Australian Qualifications Framework, above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree. It is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods (semesters or trimesters depending on the institute's calendar). You complete a set of units of study, each with a credit point value, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, the final part of the course is usually a professional experience placement in a licensed early childhood service, where you take on more responsibility under supervision. Assessment is practical: observations, portfolios, projects, and supervised work with children.

You learn to observe and document children's development, design experiences that build language, numeracy, creativity and social skills, and support children with additional needs. You also cover health, safety and nutrition, legal and ethical requirements, working with families and communities, and the National Quality Framework that regulates early childhood services in Australia. The placement is the part employers ask about most, because it shows you can work in a real room with real ratios.

This course suits people who want to start working in early childhood education reasonably quickly, career changers, and educators already working in the sector who want to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education if you decide to go further. English proficiency is required for international applicants, and you should check the official CRICOS page for the exact tuition and intake details.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
