The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle management roles, or who are already in them and want the formal credential to back it up. You study how organisations plan work, manage budgets and financial plans, lead teams through change, build business relationships, and keep operations compliant with Australian workplace law. Assessment is usually a mix of case studies, simulated workplace projects and written tasks rather than exams alone.
This is an AQF advanced diploma, which sits above a certificate IV and diploma and below a bachelor degree. It is delivered over one year of full-time study. Delivery varies by provider, some run it across two or three study periods a year, others use rolling intakes, and each unit carries credit points that count toward the qualification. Confirm the exact structure, unit list and credit point values with the provider before you enrol.
What you actually practise: writing an operational plan, managing a team's performance, leading a workplace project from scope to sign-off, handling conflict, and reporting against budgets. Many providers build in a work placement, a live industry project or a simulated business environment where you run the scenario end to end. Australian employers in retail, hospitality, logistics, health administration and community services hire on demonstrated supervisory ability, so the practical tasks matter more than the theory.
It suits three groups: people already supervising a small team who want a recognised qualification, career changers moving from a technical role into management, and international students who want a shorter, cheaper entry point into Australian business study before articulating into a diploma or bachelor degree with credit. Entry is typically Year 12 or equivalent, or relevant work experience. International applicants need English proficiency, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances, check the current rules on the Department of Home Affairs website. Fees are published on the CRICOS register; search course code 105318E. Always confirm details on the official page before applying.
Graduates often articulate into a diploma or bachelor degree in business or management with credit for completed units. Australian employers in these industries hire on demonstrated supervisory experience plus the qualification, so combine the study with part-time work in your target sector where your visa allows.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$7,800 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
