The Diploma of Community Services is a 1.5-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run casework, advocate for people who are being overlooked, and work safely within the legal and ethical rules that govern community services. Expect units on case management, community development, counselling skills, working with diversity, crisis response, and the regulatory side of the job, privacy, duty of care, mandatory reporting and workplace health and safety. Assessment is practical. You write case notes, run simulated interviews, plan group activities, and complete a supervised placement in an agency such as a neighbourhood centre, family support service, homelessness service, youth program or disability provider.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are shorter and more applied than a bachelor degree, which normally takes three years, and they are built around units of study rather than majors. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to pass the required set to graduate. Most providers deliver diplomas across two or three study periods a year, semesters or trimesters, with a mix of face-to-face classes, online learning and workshop days. Work-integrated learning is standard in this field: the placement is usually a block of several weeks, supervised by a qualified practitioner, and you are assessed on the job as well as on campus.
Skills you finish with include intake and assessment, case planning, referral, group facilitation, report writing, de-escalation, cultural safety, and the ability to work with people from many backgrounds without judgement. You also learn how to look after yourself in a job that can be emotionally heavy, reflective practice, supervision and boundaries. The qualification does not make you a registered social worker; that requires a university degree and accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers. What it does do is get you into the sector quickly and give you a recognised credential for support and casework roles.
This course suits people already working in care or support who want to move into a caseworker or team leader role, career changers who want to start in community services, and school leavers who prefer hands-on training to a three-year degree. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish. English requirements vary by provider, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 is common for diplomas, though social work courses often ask for 7.0–7.5. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current fees, intake dates and placement arrangements.
Employers include not-for-profit agencies, state and local government, community health centres, disability and aged care providers, and settlement services. Many graduates continue to a bachelor degree in social work or community services to open up registered social worker roles.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
