The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification for people who want to run the show, a restaurant, a hotel department, an events operation, a licensed venue. It sits at the diploma/advanced diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, above a Certificate III or IV and below a bachelor degree. You study how hospitality businesses actually work: rostering and labour cost, food and beverage service, stock and purchasing, budgeting, compliance with liquor and food safety law, marketing, and leading a team of people who are often casual, young and working nights.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. You complete a set number of core units plus electives, usually over four or five study periods across two years. Assessment is practical as much as written, you will be observed running service, handling a complaint, costing a menu, or preparing a roster. Most hospitality programmes include a work placement or industry shift component, because the field hires on demonstrated skill and referees, not transcripts alone. Your training provider will confirm the exact unit list, placement hours and delivery mode on the official course page.
By the end you should be able to write a budget and read a profit and loss statement, manage a roster to a wage target, order and control stock, deal with a difficult customer without losing the room, and supervise staff safely under Australian workplace law. You also learn the compliance side that trips up new managers: responsible service of alcohol, food safety, workplace health and safety, and fair work obligations. Communication matters as much as the technical skills, you will be managing people from many backgrounds, often in a second language for some of them.
This suits someone already working in hospitality who wants a management title, a career changer who likes the pace of the industry, or an international student who wants a practical qualification with a clear pathway into work. Australia's hospitality sector is large and short of skilled supervisors, particularly in hotels, aged care catering, tourism regions and the events industry. International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, check current conditions with the Department of Home Affairs. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm English entry requirements, unit structure and placement arrangements with the provider before you enrol.
Employers include hotel groups, pub and club operators, restaurant groups, contract caterers, event companies, tourism operators and aged care providers. Some graduates go on to a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business with credit for their diploma studies.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$21,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
