The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to move into team leader, supervisor or frontline management roles, or who already hold one and want formal recognition of what they do. It sits at AQF level 5, below a bachelor degree, and it is practical rather than academic. You study how organisations plan work, how budgets are set and monitored, how staff are recruited and supported, and how a manager deals with a complaint, a safety incident or a project that has slipped. Expect units on managing operational plans, leading and developing teams, workplace relationships, risk, and continuous improvement.
Australian diplomas are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually eight units over two semesters, though many providers offer trimesters or rolling intakes so you can start at several points in the year. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, case studies, role plays, presentations and portfolio work drawn from your own workplace where you have one. There is no research thesis at this level. Where the qualification includes work-integrated learning, it takes the form of a placement or a simulated workplace project, and you should check the official course page for whether placement is required and how it is arranged.
You finish able to write an operational plan and track it, run a team meeting that ends in decisions, give feedback that does not cause a grievance, read a budget and explain a variance, and apply the Fair Work framework and WHS obligations in day-to-day decisions. Group work is common because the job is group work. You will also practise the paperwork that managers are judged on: rosters, performance plans, incident reports, improvement registers. These are the skills employers list when they advertise for a supervisor, and they are the skills that let you step up from being the best operator on the floor to running it.
This suits school leavers who want a fast, job-ready qualification, people already working in retail, hospitality, aged care, logistics or administration who want a promotion, and international students who want an Australian qualification with a clear pathway into a bachelor degree. Credit from the diploma is often granted towards a related bachelor course, so it can shorten a degree by a semester or more. International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on the stream and the rules at the time. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs also sets a separate English threshold for the visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 104211B. Check the official page for current entry requirements, intakes and fees before you apply.
These roles are advertised across most Australian industries, with the strongest demand in health and community services, retail and hospitality, transport and logistics, and government administration. The diploma also gives you a credit pathway into a bachelor degree in business, management or a related field if you decide to keep studying.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$10,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
