The Diploma of Business is a one-year qualification at the Australian Health and Horticulture Institute. It is a hands-on introduction to how businesses actually run: how money moves, how people are managed, how customers are won and kept, and how the paperwork and compliance side of an organisation holds together. You will study units in areas such as business operations, marketing, finance, customer service and workplace communication. Assessment is mostly practical, reports, plans, presentations and simulated business tasks, rather than long written exams.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are shorter and more applied than a bachelor degree, which normally takes three years. A diploma is usually delivered over two semesters or three trimesters, made up of individual units of study, each carrying a set number of credit points. You need to pass all required units to graduate. There is no research thesis at this level, but most diplomas include a final unit or project where you pull together what you have learned and apply it to a business scenario or a real workplace task.
By the end, you should be able to read a budget and explain what it means, write a basic marketing plan, handle customer complaints without escalating everything, work in a team on a project with a deadline, and understand the basic legal and ethical rules that apply to Australian businesses. You will also practise the kind of writing and speaking that offices expect, emails that get to the point, meetings that stay on track, and short reports that a manager can actually use.
This course suits school leavers who want a practical start before committing to a degree, people already working in administration or retail who want a formal qualification, and international students looking for a shorter course that builds into further study. If you finish the diploma, you may be able to get credit towards a bachelor degree at some Australian institutions, ask them directly about how much credit they will give you for these units. English requirements for international applicants are typically IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent. The Student visa has its own separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, most student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm current unit lists, entry requirements and fees on the official course page before you apply.
These roles exist across most Australian industries, including healthcare, agriculture and horticulture, professional services, government and not-for-profit organisations. Some students use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in business, commerce or management, then move into more specialised roles in finance, human resources or operations.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
