About this program

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, and how to keep them safe and well while their families are at work or study. It is a hands-on diploma, not a lecture-heavy degree, and most of what you learn you practise in a real centre.

Australian diplomas sit at level 5 on the AQF and are usually made up of units of study, each carrying credit points, delivered over semesters or trimesters. This one runs for a year, so expect a compact schedule with a mix of classroom units and a vocational placement block in a licensed early childhood service. You will cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, nutrition, working with families, inclusion and legal and ethical requirements. Assessment is practical: observations, portfolios, projects and supervised hours in a centre, where you work alongside educators and are signed off on the skills you need on the floor.

The skills you finish with are the ones employers ask about in interviews: setting up indoor and outdoor play spaces, writing learning stories and observations, guiding behaviour, supporting children with additional needs, communicating with parents, and following the National Quality Framework, including the Early Years Learning Framework. You also learn to work as part of a team, take direction from a nominated supervisor, and keep the paperwork that licensing and accreditation visits require.

This diploma suits school leavers who want to start working with children without a three-year degree, career changers who have raised a family or worked in care and want a qualification behind them, and educators already working in the sector who need the diploma to move into a room leader or lead educator role. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is running, and after you finish you may be able to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English requirements are set out on the official page, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with equivalents accepted. Check the CRICOS register and the college's own page for the current tuition, intake dates and placement arrangements before you apply.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
