The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You'll study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, and how to keep children safe and well. The course covers child development, observation and assessment, working with families, inclusion and diversity, health and safety, and the legal and ethical rules that guide early childhood educators. You'll also learn how to document children's learning and use that evidence to plan what comes next.
This is a vocational qualification, not a university degree. It's delivered over one year of full-time study, typically across two or three study periods. You'll complete a set of units of study, each with a credit point value, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. The exact unit list and credit points are set by the training package and the provider, so check the official course page for the current structure. Assessment is practical: you'll be observed working with children, submit portfolios, and complete written tasks. Most diplomas include a work placement component, usually in a registered early childhood service, where you'll be supervised by qualified educators. That placement is where you put the theory into practice and build the hours you need for registration.
You'll learn to design and implement a curriculum that follows the Early Years Learning Framework, support children's language, literacy and numeracy development, and respond to behaviour in ways that respect each child. You'll practise working with families from different backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. You'll also pick up the administrative side: keeping records, following regulations, and working within the National Quality Framework. By the end, you should be able to run a room independently and contribute to a service's quality improvement plan.
This diploma suits people who want to work directly with young children and lead a room or service. It's a common pathway for those already working in the sector who want to upskill, and for career changers who want a hands-on qualification without a three-year degree. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet English requirements (IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is common, though some providers ask for higher) and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Always confirm the details on the official CRICOS page and with the provider.
These roles are in demand across Australia, in metropolitan and regional areas. Employers include long day care centres, community preschools, private kindergartens, family day care schemes, and school-based early learning programs. The diploma also gives you a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in early childhood education, which can lead to teacher registration.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
