The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year vocational qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil projects, roads, drainage, bridges, subdivisions, water and sewerage infrastructure. You learn to produce detailed drawings and design documentation, use civil design software, apply surveying and drafting principles, and work to Australian standards and project specifications. It sits at diploma level on the AQF, so it is practical and job-focused rather than academic.
Delivery is built around units of competency rather than semesters of lectures. Each unit carries credit points and is assessed on what you can actually do, produce a set of drawings, complete a design task, work through a project brief. Most providers run two or three study periods a year. Alongside the design units you cover estimating and costing, site investigation, materials, workplace safety, and sustainability in civil works. Many courses include a work placement or simulated project where you work to a real brief with a supervising designer.
Skills you finish with: reading and interpreting engineering plans, preparing civil drawings to scale, using CAD and civil design software, calculating quantities and costs, checking designs against standards, and communicating with engineers, surveyors and site staff. You also pick up the documentation habits that matter on Australian projects, version control, drawing registers, and the paper trail that keeps a design compliant.
This suits people who like the technical side of construction and want to be the person producing the drawings and design details, not swinging a hammer. School leavers, tradespeople moving off the tools, and international students looking for a skilled occupation pathway all take this route. It is not an engineering degree, it will not make you a professional engineer, but it gets you into civil design offices and onto project teams. Entry usually needs Year 12 or equivalent, and international applicants must meet English requirements. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Check the CRICOS register for current tuition, intake dates and campus details.
Employers include civil engineering consultancies, local councils, state road and water authorities, and construction contractors working on subdivisions, transport and utilities. The qualification can also count as credit towards further study in civil engineering or construction management at some institutions.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$30,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
