The Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) is a one-year qualification for people who want to run building projects rather than just work on them. You study how construction work is planned, priced, scheduled and supervised, the paperwork and people side of the industry as much as the technical side. Typical units cover contract administration, estimating and tendering, work health and safety, building codes and standards, site supervision, and project scheduling. Assessment is usually a mix of assignments, reports and practical tasks rather than exams alone.
This is an AQF diploma, which sits below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. It is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods depending on how the provider structures its calendar. You will complete a set number of units of study, each carrying credit points, and the diploma as a whole carries a defined credit value. Some providers build in a work placement or site-based project so you spend time on an actual construction site, not just in a classroom.
What you actually learn is how to take a set of drawings and turn them into a job that gets built on time and on budget. That means reading plans, preparing estimates, writing contracts, coordinating trades, managing safety on site, and dealing with clients and subcontractors when something goes wrong. You also pick up the compliance side, knowing which Australian Standards and National Construction Code provisions apply, and how to document that you have met them.
The diploma suits people already working in construction who want to move into supervision or management, and school leavers who want a faster, more practical route into the industry than a three-year degree. It also works as a stepping stone: many students use a diploma to gain credit towards a bachelor degree in construction management later. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for entry requirements, English proficiency, tuition and start dates before you apply.
These roles sit across residential building, commercial construction, civil infrastructure, government works departments and specialist subcontractors. Some graduates go on to further study and registration as a building practitioner in their state or territory.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
