The Diploma of Remedial Massage is a one-year qualification for people who want to work as remedial massage therapists. Remedial massage sits between relaxation massage and clinical treatment. You assess a client's problem, work out which muscles and joints are involved, and treat it with hands-on techniques. The course covers anatomy and physiology, musculoskeletal assessment, massage methods and how to run a clinic. You learn about the body's systems, how injuries heal, and the safety rules that apply when you treat people. Expect to spend a lot of time practising on each other before you work with the public.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over one year full time, split into two or three study periods. Instead of semesters, many vocational institutions run rolling intakes and teach in blocks, so you might finish a group of units, then start the next. Each unit is worth credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Your units will include anatomy and physiology, assessment, massage practice, and professional conduct. The last part of the course is usually a supervised student clinic, where you treat real clients and write up your case notes. Some providers also arrange placement in a sports club, physiotherapy practice or aged care setting. You will need to complete a set number of practical hours to qualify.
By the end, you can take a case history, test range of motion, identify trigger points and treat soft tissue problems with your hands. You learn to adapt pressure for different bodies and conditions, and to know when a client needs to see someone else. You also pick up the business side: keeping records, managing appointments, and talking to clients about what you find and what you plan to do. Infection control and professional boundaries are part of every unit.
This diploma suits people who want to work with their hands and help others, and who are comfortable touching bodies and talking about pain. It is a good fit if you are changing careers, returning to work, or building on a certificate in massage. It also works as a stepping stone if you plan to study further in health. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) after you finish. Check the CRICOS register for tuition and confirm the current unit list, clinic hours and English requirements with Australia Unity Institute of Technology before you enrol.
Most graduates work in private practice, sports medicine, or community health across Australia. Some go on to study a bachelor degree in health science or clinical massage.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$14,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
