The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a postgraduate qualification for people who lead learning inside organisations. It sits at graduate diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, so it's a step above a bachelor degree but shorter than a master's. You'll study how adults learn, how to design and assess training, how to manage a registered training organisation or a learning function, and how to use data to check whether training actually changed anything. Expect units on adult learning principles, instructional design, assessment validation, compliance with the Australian Skills Quality Authority standards, leading teams of trainers, and budgeting for learning programs. Your assessments will be practical: write a training needs analysis, design a unit of competency, run a validation session, build a professional development plan for a team.
Australian graduate diplomas are usually made up of eight to ten units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and delivered over two years part-time or one year full-time. This one is listed as two years, which often means it's offered part-time to people already working in training or HR. You'll enrol in units each semester or trimester, and some providers run intensive blocks or online clusters so you can keep working. There's no research thesis at this level, but you'll usually finish with a capstone unit where you pull everything together, a learning and development strategy for a real organisation, or a compliance audit of an RTO's assessment tools. Work-integrated learning is common in this field: many students are already employed as trainers, assessors or L&D coordinators, and assignments are built around their own workplace.
You'll learn to write learning outcomes that mean something, choose delivery methods that suit the audience, and design assessments that are valid, reliable and fair. You'll get across the regulatory side, the Standards for RTOs, the AQF levels, credit transfer and recognition of prior learning. You'll also cover the management side: leading a training team, managing stakeholder relationships, reporting on training effectiveness, and making a business case for learning investment. Group work and presentations are common, because that's what the job looks like.
This course suits trainers and assessors who want to move into management, HR professionals who've been handed the L&D portfolio, and people from industry, mining, health, community services, trades, who now train others and want a formal qualification. It also works for international students who've finished a bachelor degree and want an Australian postgraduate qualification in learning and development. If you're already a qualified teacher, this is a different pathway: it's about managing learning in organisations, not school teaching. English requirements for international applicants are typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents, and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work in Australia, check the current rules with Home Affairs. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm unit lists, entry requirements and delivery modes on the official page before you apply.
Australian industries that hire these roles include vocational education and training providers, government departments, healthcare and aged care, mining and resources, construction, retail, banking and professional services. Many graduates stay with their current employer and step into a more senior learning role.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
