The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that trains you to run the show in hotels, restaurants, resorts, clubs and catering operations. You start with the fundamentals, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office, food safety, responsible service of alcohol, then move into the parts of the job that carry real responsibility: rostering and staffing, budgeting and financial control, purchasing and stock, marketing, compliance with health and licensing laws, and leading a team through a busy service. Assessment is practical. You work in simulated service environments, complete written tasks and projects, and build a portfolio of evidence from your placements. By the end you should be able to walk into a venue, read a profit and loss statement, write a roster that actually works, and handle a difficult customer without losing your cool.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points, and this advanced diploma is no different. You enrol in units across semesters or trimesters, with each unit assessed on its own. The early units cover operational skills; the later ones cover management, finance and compliance. Most students complete around 15 to 20 units over two years. The course includes a work placement component, because hospitality is a trade you learn by doing, you will spend time in a real venue under supervision, logging hours and completing workplace tasks. Your placement provider is usually arranged with help from the institution, and it counts toward your qualification.
You learn to manage people, money and premises. That means recruiting and inducting staff, managing rosters and wage costs, controlling stock and wastage, handling cash and banking, preparing budgets, and reading the numbers that tell you whether a venue is making money. You also learn the regulatory side: food safety plans, liquor licensing, workplace health and safety, and the legal responsibilities that come with serving alcohol. On the customer side, you learn to handle complaints, manage functions and events, and deal with the pressures of peak service. Communication and teamwork run through all of it, because hospitality is a people business.
This course suits people who want to work in hospitality management rather than just front-line service. If you have worked in a cafe, hotel or restaurant and want to move into a supervisory or duty manager role, this gives you the formal qualification to back up your experience. It also suits school leavers who know they want a career in hotels, resorts, events or food and beverage, and international students who want an Australian qualification in a field where jobs are plentiful. The Australian hospitality industry employs hundreds of thousands of people, and managers with formal training are always in demand. After graduating, eligible students may apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which allows you to stay and work in Australia for a period after your course ends. While you study, your student visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight once your course has started. Confirm all visa conditions with the Department of Home Affairs, and check the official CRICOS page for current course details, tuition and English requirements.
Hiring industries across Australia include hotels and resorts, restaurants and cafes, pubs and bars, licensed clubs, event and conference venues, catering companies, aged care and healthcare food services, and tourism operators. The qualification also gives you credit toward further study, such as a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business management at an Australian university.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
