The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) offered by the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University (ANU) is a comprehensive research-intensive programme that provides an opportunity to undertake original and significant research in astronomy and astrophysics. Based in Canberra, this programme is situated at one of Australia’s premier centres for astronomical research, with opportunities to collaborate closely with internationally recognised scientists and to access world-class observational and supercomputing facilities.
Spanning four years full-time, the PhD is structured in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) for doctoral study. The core component is the completion of an independent and substantial research thesis, supervised by experts in the field. While the focus is on research, candidates may also undertake relevant coursework units to support their research objectives, and are encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences, and collaborative research activities. Many candidates have the opportunity to gain skills through presentations, teaching assistance, and public engagement.
Candidates will develop skills in advanced data analysis, problem-solving, critical thinking, scientific communication, and project management. The programme is suited to graduates with a strong background in physics, mathematics, or a related discipline who wish to pursue careers in research, academia, or technical roles in astronomy and astrophysics. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency as per ANU's requirements, with IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, and Cambridge C1 Advanced among accepted tests. Confirm specific entry standards and English language requirements on the official programme page.
Australian PhD students benefit from work rights of up to 48 hours per fortnight, and international graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. The Research School has strong links to national and international research partners, and students are integrated into the wider Australian astronomy community through industry and research collaborations.
It typically takes 4 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$234,100 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
