The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that prepares you for supervisory and management roles in hotels, restaurants, resorts, clubs, and catering operations. You study how a hospitality business actually runs: rostering and labour cost control, food and beverage operations, financial reporting, marketing, and the legal side of serving alcohol and managing staff. Some providers also include kitchen or front-office units, depending on the stream. Assessment is mostly practical, running service periods, writing operational plans, completing projects, rather than exams alone.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually four units per semester or trimester, and you need to complete all core and elective units to graduate. Delivery may be on campus, in a training kitchen or restaurant, or blended. Because the course is competency-based, you must demonstrate each skill, not just pass a written test. Confirm the exact unit list, delivery mode, and campus on the official CRICOS register and the provider's page.
You learn to lead a shift, manage stock and suppliers, interpret profit and loss statements, handle customer complaints, and comply with food safety, WHS, and responsible service of alcohol requirements. You also practise rostering within a wage budget and coordinating with kitchen, housekeeping, and front desk teams. These are the tasks that hospitality managers do every day, so the training is hands-on.
This course suits people who want to move from front-line hospitality work into a supervisory or duty manager role, or who already have some industry experience and want formal recognition. It is also a pathway to a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, with credit for completed units. International students should note that the Student visa allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight while studying, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, though the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate minimum for the visa itself. Check all requirements with the provider and the CRICOS listing before applying.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
